Subject: Exempting Select Administrators From Contract Formula Dear Board Members,
I want to thank you for the public discussion last night about the possibility of removing two individuals from the formula that determines staff salaries.
As a resident and parent in this district, and also a candidate for school board, I want to encourage board members to remember that our schools are one of the things that attract people to our community. We cannot have a strong community without a strong school system, and we cannot have a strong school system unless we recognize that all of us – board members, administrators, teachers, building staff, parents, and students – are all on the same team. What benefits one member of the team benefits all the others, and what hurts one member hurts all the others.
Removing two select administrators from the contract formula that applies to everyone else would have a severe trickle-down effect on all levels of our community team. I worry that it could further negatively impact the morale of our staff and hinder our ability to recruit and retain the best educators we can find for our kids and our families in Grosse Pointe.
I understand and appreciate the argument that those advising the board on implementing the formula should not be impacted by the decision, but I believe it is wrong to remove the human element from such an important discussion. Ultimately the choice to implement the formula or not rests with the board, but it is imperative for the board to consider the impact of its decisions on both the employees and the families in the district.
I respectfully ask that while the formula exists, you not exempt select administrators from its impacts.
Thank you,
Chris Profeta
