School Closing Information
-
When deciding whether to close schools here are some of the factors that are taken into consideration:
- Actual temperature and wind chills
- Amount and type of snow
- When the snow falls, and when the snowfall is expected to end
- Ability to clear parking lots and sidewalks around school
- Freezing rain and the effect on roads, power lines and tree limbs
All of these factors are reviewed in total, taking into account the fact that the Grosse Pointe municipalities and our facilities staff do an outstanding job of clearing streets, sidewalks and parking lots. Typically a decision regarding school closure is made no later than 5:30 a.m., however, in some instances a decision can be made prior to 5:30 a.m.
Notice of school closings or a delayed start will appear on:
RADIO - WJR 760AM, WNIC 100.3 FM, WOMC 104.3 FM, WWJ 950AM
TELEVISION - FOX Channel 2, WDIV Channel 4, WXYZ Channel 7
An automated voice message will also be sent out by District Administration along with an email to all families in the District, and posts on official GPPSS social media (Twitter and Facebook).
Students in the district who ride the bus to special education programs will be contacted by our transportation provider Trinity Transportation if bus service will not be available due to inclement weather, or if the bus will be delayed.
Parents/guardians always have the right to keep their children at home if they do not believe they should be going to school because of weather conditions. However, they should call the school’s Attendance Line to report the reason for their child’s absence.
Please keep this information handy for future reference.
