When to Keep Your Child Home?

A parent/guardian will be called at home or work if an injury or illness occurs at school.

If a child is unable to participate comfortably in school activities or if there is risk of spread of harmful disease to others, the student will be excluded from school.

Here is a list of criteria for various symptoms/illnesses that may occur:

1. Severely ill: A child that is lethargic or less responsive, has difficulty breathing, or has a rapidly spreading rash.

2. Fever: A child with a temperature of 100.4°F or greater AND behavior changes or other signs or symptoms (e.g., sore throat, rash, vomiting, or diarrhea). The child should not return until 24 hours of no fever, without the use of fever-reducing medications.

3. Diarrhea: A child has two loose or watery stools. The child should have no loose stools for 24 hours prior to returning to school. Exception: A healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious. For students with diarrhea caused by Campylobacter, E. coli, Salmonella or Shigella, please refer to the chart for exclusions and required clearance criteria.

4. Vomiting: A child that has vomited two or more times. The child should have no vomiting episodes for 24 hours prior to returning. A child can return to school when able to tolerate liquids and food. Exception: A healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious.

5. Abdominal pain: A child with abdominal pain that continues for more than two hours, or intermittent pain associated with fever or other symptoms.

6. Rash: A child with a rash AND has a fever or a change in behavior. Exclude until the rash subsides or until a healthcare provider has determined it is not infectious. For students with a diagnosed rash, please refer to the chart for exclusions and required clearance criteria.

7. Skin sores: A child with weeping sores on an exposed area that cannot be covered with waterproof dressing.

Medication Guidelines

The administration of medication in the school setting is a service that is provided to promote wellness, decrease absenteeism and remove barriers to learning. Please review the following to ensure the best and safest practices are provided for your child.

If your child needs any prescription or over the counter medication during the school day there must be a Medication Administration Authorization form filled out completely and signed by a Licensed Health Care Provider/Physician and parent/guardian. OR

If your student will carry and self-administer their own medication during the school day, you must have a completed Medication Administration Authorization for Self-Administration/ Self-Possession form on file and on their person to carry any medication in school.

All forms must be dated after July 1st of the upcoming school year and be received by the office prior to any medications being given by school staff. Faxed medication forms signed by a physician are acceptable but must also be signed by a parent/guardian before any medication can be distributed.

Any student with a condition requiring emergency medication (Asthma, Allergies, Seizures, Diabetes or other) must also have an Emergency Action Plan filled out completely and signed by a Licensed Health Care Provider/Physician and parent/guardian.

New forms must be provided every school year and with any changes. Old forms will be discarded at the end of each school year.

Medications should be brought in by a parent or responsible adult at the beginning of the school year. If a parent is unable to come into the office, we ask them to inform the office staff and let them know the amount of medication and who will be dropping it off. Medication supply is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

Prescription medication must be in its original container labeled by a pharmacist. All over the counter medication needs to be in the original container with the label intact and clearly marked with the student’s name. Parents/guardians may request two containers (one for school and one for home) from the pharmacy.

All prescription medication will be counted and signed by office staff and parent/responsible adult when medications are brought into the office.

Parents/guardians should always give the first dose of any medication (exception emergency medications) before sending to school.

All unused medications should be picked up by the parent or responsible adult by the end of the school year. Any medication not picked up will be properly disposed of by staff.
