Magnet Program

The Grosse Pointe Public School System offers a magnet program for 3rd and 4th graders that exhibit the need for accelerated learning. This district program currently has magnet classrooms housed at Defer, Ferry, Monteith and Richard Elementary Schools.

About the district’s Magnet Program

In magnet classrooms, the grade-level subject curriculum follows the Grosse Pointe curriculum but is extended to meet the accelerated cognitive needs of identified students. Students are advanced at least one year in math, and language arts concepts are taught with advanced depth and breadth. Content area subjects (social studies and science) are taught on a yearly, rotational basis.

Recommendation for the magnet program is based on several factors: district-wide NWEA testing results in both Math and ELA, current classroom teacher recommendation in ELA, Math, and gifted traits, student Grosse Pointe Writing Assessment sample, and parental input.

We need your input

GPPSS is seeking additional parent input in two ways:

  1. Participate in a Magnet Listening Session from 6:30-7:30 p.m, Wednesday, November 12, in the North Library. All are welcome to attend and share their input on how to continue to enhance our program. Topics we anticipate discussing include:

    1. Location(s)

    2. Application process

    3. Curricular design

  2. Apply to be part of a formal Magnet Study, utilizing the Educational Program Leadership Council (EPLC) subgroup format. Similar to any curriculum committee, members of the school community are invited to apply to serve in this capacity by emailing delgads@gpschools.org a copy of their resume and a letter of interest that details how their skill set and experience would enhance the process. Members will be chosen to provide diverse voices across the district. This is open to parents/guardians of students who chose to participate as well as those who did not. We will also be seeking current high school students who participated in Magnet to ensure student voice in the decisions moving our program forward. At this time we anticipate a commitment of two evening meetings prior to launching the Magnet application process in January.
