School Board
The Role of the School Board
The primary function of the board of education is to oversee the education of students in the community. Educational programs conducted at the elementary, middle and high school levels are most familiar. Many local and intermediate school districts also operate preschool and adult education programs for large numbers of people.

Under Michigan law, a board of education has the ultimate responsibility for school district operations. Among other things, the Revised School Code gives each board of education general powers to:
- Educate students
- Provide for the safety and welfare of students
- Acquire and dispose of school property
- Determine matters relating to school employees and contractors
- Control the expenditure and receipt of school funds
- Make joint agreements and cooperative arrangements.
Specific provisions in the Revised School Code also assign responsibilities to school boards in areas such as:
- Setting the curricula and courses taught in the schools
- Employing a superintendent, other administrators, teachers and support personnel
- Levying local taxes to run the schools and adopting a budget
- Deciding whether or not to furnish transportation for pupils

Contact the Board
Thank you for your interest in the Grosse Pointe Public School System Board of Education. The board’s role is to oversee and set school policy, hire and work in partnership with the superintendent, and develop and oversee the district's balanced budget. The feedback and voices of our community members play an integral role in those responsibilities, and members of the board work diligently to be accessible to their constituents.
You are always encouraged to direct questions and complaints at the level most appropriate to your concern. Often that means first contacting a teacher, then a building administrator, then a central office administrator. Contact information for all staff is listed on the individual building websites or you may use the “Contact Us” section on the district website.
You may email the board by sending your comments to our school board email address. Emails to this address are received by all board members, the superintendent, deputy superintendent and members of the communications team. The board reads every email that comes in.
Please note the following:
Every regular meeting of the board includes an opportunity for public comment. Public comments at board meetings are limited to three minutes. If you wish to address the board, please attend the next scheduled meeting and file a public comment request card.
We welcome and value your input. Thank you for contacting the Grosse Pointe Board of Education.
- A member of the administration or the board president shall respond on behalf of the board when appropriate.
- If your email concerns a daily or operational issue, it will be forwarded on to the appropriate administrator for a response.
- Unless an email addresses a matter involving an individual student or is otherwise statutorily protected from disclosure, emails to the board or its individual members are considered a form of public comment and may be shared with others as the board deems appropriate or as otherwise required.
- If you choose to email a specific board member, please include your phone number for a response. If that board member chooses to respond via email (although they are not obligated to do so), that response may be copied to all members of the board and the superintendent.
