Each quarter, you will need 200 points of outside viewing. These are new and old films that I have (mostly) seen and will add something to our understanding of film art. Many will have links to what we’re watching in class. YOU CAN GET EXTRA CREDIT BY WATCHING FILMS ABOVE THE 200 POINT MINIMUM (UP TO 300 POINTS TOTAL).Many of these will require a trip to theaters in Detroit or nearby suburbs (sometimes Ann Arbor). For the transportationally challenged, I have a small personal library of films that you can check out to fulfill this requirement. I will also alert you to important screenings on cable channel TCM (Turner Classic Movies) and others you can catch on video. If you are really stuck, there is a list of films on this web site. Watch one of those and write it up for 25 points.
What to write about? Use the ART FILM WEB we devised early in the semester as your guide. What is the movie ABOUT (meaning?) What techniques does the movie use? Is there evidence of a strong director at work? (You can use the Internet Movie Database for background, but please make sure to quote properly if using anything word for word). Try to link to films we watched in class. When seeing movies in a theater: You can also write about the experience of seeing the movie in a specific venue (especially at Redford or DFT) Simple plot description will get you very few points.
YOU MUST ALSO ATTACH A TICKET STUB FOR MOVIES SEEN IN THEATERS.
NOTE: PLEASE DO NOT COPY WORK AS YOUR OWN - FROM INTERNET SITES OF ELSEWHERE. I WILL CATCH YOU AND YOU WILL LOSE FULL CREDIT (200 POINTS!) ON THIS ASSIGNMENT.
50 points: Any movie viewed at these local art houses (please attach ticket stub to essay)
THE DETROIT FILM THEATRE (link: www.dia.org/dft)

THE MAIN ART THEATRE (www.landmarktheatres.com)
This remains Detroit's most popular art house, where most of the strongest art, independent and foreign films screen.
THE REDFORD (www.redfordtheatre.com)The Redford Theatre – a historic neighborhood theater in the Old Redford section of Detroit (Lahser at Grand River) – offers classic films in an old movie house setting (plus cheap refreshments) every other weekend. Note: There are security guards in the parking lot, but the neighborhood surrounding the theater has fallen on mostly hard times. $6.CINEMA DETROIT (www.cinemadetroit.com)New location: Willis and Third St. in Midtown. Two screens with alternative and offbeat films.
Select films on cable, Netflix or video (see list of FAVORITE MONAGHAN FILMS on this web site). See me if you're not sure what to write about. Typically one well-written page will earn 25 points. NOT JUST PLOT. ANALYSIS. Remember: What is it About? BIG A (meaning), not small a (plot).TO REITERATE,DO NOT PLAGIARIZE THESE ESSAYS. I will find out and issue a zero for the assignment, plus send referral to office. I know how you write!!!
