The Grosse Pointe Public Schools English Language Arts Program uses Reading and Writing Workshop to build foundational skills. The curriculum is aligned to the Common Core Standards. The model focuses on the strengths and needs of each individual student. There are several consistent components of the workshop model, however variation within grade levels may occur.
The Reading and Writing Workshop components include:
mini-lesson
independent daily reading (IDR) and writing time
conferencing
small group instruction
sharing with accountable talk
read aloud and mentor texts
The ultimate goal of a workshop approach is for students to develop lifelong reading habits and writing skills.
