Social Work
School Social Workers bring unique knowledge, expertise and skills to the school system and the student services team.
School Social Workers are instrumental in furthering the mission of the Grosse Pointe Public School System: to ensure that all our students learn and apply the knowledge, skills, and behaviors necessary to excel in their ever-changing world especially where a priority on home, school and community collaboration is key to achieving that mission.
The School Social Worker is a member of the Student Services team involved in the evaluation and assessment process to determine a student’s eligibility for special education services.
The School Social Worker evaluates the social and emotional development of students and how both internal and external factors may affect behavior and achievement in school. The School Social Worker assessment includes gathering information concerning the student’s health, family and school history as it pertains to the student’s current school functioning.
School Social Workers work directly with students towards achieving specific goals indicated on the IEP and assist both general education and special education teachers to maximize a student’s potential.
School Social Workers are also available to help families better understand and cope with their child’s special needs. Furthermore, the School Social Worker supports the child in developing the skills necessary to succeed socially and academically within the school setting and their community. |
