Summary of the Grosse Pointe Board of Education Meeting,

May 10, 2004

 

 

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Suzanne Klein, Superintendent of Schools; members of the Board of Education; and members of the foreign language department recognized the achievements of students who had received honors in foreign language achievement and those who had received honors in instrumental and choral music.  Lee Warras, Director of School and Community Development, then provided an update on the implementation of the recommendations from the High School Study, with members of the High School Study Steering Committee having an opportunity to provide information to the Board.

 

HUMAN RESOURCES REPORT

Dr. Klein provided information about a return from a leave of absence and the continuation of five others, as well as the retirements of Russell LeBlanc (Pierce principal), Marjorie Parsons (assistant superintendent for evaluation and assessment), Nancy Kline (Defer teacher), William Leleszi (Brownell teacher), Alvin Moebus (South teacher), Michael Carrier (Parcells head engineer), Dennis Harrigan (Trombly head custodian), and John Heuft (Parcells custodian).

 

SCHOOLS OF CHOICE

The Board approved a resolution to opt out of the Schools of Choice provisions of PA 300, noting Board Policy JBC, which traditionally provides two exceptions to the Board’s residency policy.

 

RETIREMENT RESOLUTION

The Board adopted a resolution to honor the services of retiring staff members.  In addition to those listed above, other employees who are retiring include Mary Ostrowski (Pierce attendance clerk), Stacey Sarowski (Richard classroom assistant), and Vanda Skuras (secretary to South High School assistant principal).

 

ELECTION INSPECTORS RESOLUTION
The Board also adopted a resolution appointing election inspectors and alternates for the June 14 school election and approving the designated rates of pay for that election.

 

FIELD TRIP
The Board approved a request for the South and North crew team to attend the rowing regatta in St. Catherine’s, Ontario, on June 3-6.  The team’s sponsors have agreed to follow all extra precautions related to safety.

BID APPROVALS
The Board approved the following bids:

 

HVAC at Barnes:  Awarded to Denny’s Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration for $73,307, with $53,707 coming from the bond issue and $19,600 coming from the sinking fund.

 

HVAC at Mason:  Awarded to Denny’s Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration for $87,137, with $51,637 coming from the bond issue and $35,500 coming from the sinking fund.

 

HVAC at Defer:  Awarded to R. W. Mead & Sons for $163,900.

 

Pierce Field Building:  Awarded to R. L. Corriveau Construction for $119,700, to be funded from the bond issue.

 

South Track Improvements:  Awarded to F. H. Martin Construction for $85,885, to be funded entirely from the sinking fund.

 

Floor Replacement for South Corridors:  Awarded to F. H. Martin Construction for $338,281, to be funded entirely from the voted bond.

 

Locker Replacements at Trombly:  Awarded to Shelving, Inc., for $43,800, to be funded entirely from the voted bond.

 

Phone Service:  Awarded to Focal Communications for approximately $54,000 per year for three years for local and long-distance service.

 

Computers:  Approved Dell workstations ($316,500), Dell servers ($250,000), and Microsoft software ($200,000) from the REMC (Regional Educational Media Center) bid list.

 

APPOINTMENT OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES
The Board tabled the appointment of Grosse Pointe Public Library Trustees until the May 17 Board meeting.

 

OTHER BUSINESS
Items presented for information and discussion included homework guidelines, textbook recommendations for Italian III, a building and site project update, options regarding South High School field lights usage, the middle school code of conduct for athletics and extra-curricular activities, and the State of Michigan testing plan.

 

Next Meetings

Budget hearings will be held on May 12 at 7 p.m. for high school and athletics and May 17 at 7 p.m. for elementary level.  Both meetings will be in Wicking Library at South High School.

 

A special meeting of the Board will be held on June 7 at 6 p.m. in Wicking Library, followed by a conference meeting of the Board at 8 p.m.  The regular meeting of the Board will take place on June 15, at 8 p.m. in Wicking Library.
