Summary of the Grosse Pointe Board of Education Meeting,

June 15, 2004

 

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Suzanne Klein, Superintendent of Schools, announced that Mr. Charles L. Smith, who left Grosse Pointe High School to serve in the military during World War II, had been awarded his high school diploma.  This diploma was awarded under the guidelines established by a Michigan law that allows public school districts to present diplomas to World War II veterans whose high-school careers were cut short by the war:  Applications for these diplomas may be made by the veteran or, if the veteran is deceased or disabled, by his or her family.

 

HUMAN RESOURCES REPORT

The Board approved the appointment of Gary Buslepp, assistant principal at South High School, to the position of principal of Pierce Middle School.  He replaces Russ LeBlanc, who is retiring.  The Board also approved two leave of absences (one general leave and one study leave from layoff status).  It also approved six resignations, which included one retirement (Stacey Sarowski).

 

G. A. A. A. #4

The Board approved the General Appropriations Act Amendment #4 which included the adjustment in the Non Homestead Property Tax, a reclassification of revenue from the County to the State, an adjustment in revenue and expense for the Section 52 and 53 categorical aid costs, an adjustment in flow-through grant revenue, increases in estimated fringe benefit costs, and reclassifications between budget categories.  The total impact on fund equity is a net increase of $306,185 for 2003-2004. Adjustments to the Durant Fund, Capital Projects Fund, Technology Fund, Debt Fund and School Service Fund were also approved.

 

TEXTBOOK APPROVAL

The Board approved the adoption of Forza Tre for Italian III.

 

POLICY APPROVAL
The Board approved Policy JCDD and Regulation JCDD-R (Middle School Code of Conduct for Athletics and Extra-Curricular Activities).  The policy is designed to clarify reasonable expectations for middle school students who participate in these activities, strengthen the connection between academic performance and participation in athletics and/or extracurricular activities, and define disciplinary action for student misconduct.

The Board approved its meeting calendar for the coming year.  All Board meetings will be held at 8 p.m. on Monday in South High School’s Wicking Library unless otherwise specified:

BID APPROVALS

The Board awarded the contract ($669,000) for the boiler project at the Administration Building to R. W. Mead & Sons.  This will be paid for entirely out of the energy bond.

 

The Board awarded the district-wide water treatment bid to Venture VI for a five-year contract for $89,800.

 

STUDENT REINSTATEMENT

The Board approved the Reinstatement Panel’s recommendation against the reinstatement of an 11th grade student at North.

 

OTHER BUSINESS
Items presented for information and discussion included a timeline for the science curriculum implementation, enrollment update, building and project update, textbook recommendations (5th grade sex education booklet for boys and girls, advance placement psychology, and Realidades II and II), South High School lights, and the State of Michigan testing plan.

 

Next Meetings

A special meeting of the Board will be held on June 24 at 8 p.m. in Wicking Library at South High School.  The Board will hold its Annual Organizational Meeting at 7 p.m. in Wicking Library.
