When School is Closed Because of Weather
This time of year there are always questions about how the decision is made to close the school district or cancel events and activities. When deciding whether to close schools here are some of the factors that are taken into consideration:
Amount and type of snow
When the snow falls, and when the snowfall is expected to end
Ability to clear parking lots and sidewalks around school
Freezing rain and the effect on roads, power lines and tree limbs
Wind and wind chill
Temperature
All of these factors are reviewed in total, taking into account the fact that the Grosse Pointe municipalities and village do an outstanding job of plowing the major roads, side streets and many of the sidewalks. The school system's maintenance crews clear our parking lots.
The Manager of Building and Grounds and the Assistant Superintendent survey road conditions by driving around the system starting at 4 a.m. Based on staff feedback we consult with the Superintendent and reach a decision. This decision is normally made no later than 6:15 a.m.
Students in the district who ride the bus to special education programs will be contacted by Servicar, our transportation provider, if bus service will not be available due to inclement weather or if the bus will be delayed.
Notice of school closings or a delayed start will appear on the district web site www.gpschools.org and be announced on local radio and television stations.
