First Grade Curriculum

Reading Program

• The Grosse Pointe School System has adopted the Houghton Mifflin reading Series.  Trade books, as well as the Wright Group Sunshine Series will be used in the classroom.
• Reading, writing, and speaking are integrated into all areas of the curriculum using literature.

Writing Program

• 6 + 1 Writing Traits by Houghton Mifflin is the writing program.  It is broken down into 6 specific methods to teach the writing process.

            1.Ideas
            2.Organization
            3.Voice
            4.Word Choice
            5.Sentence Fluency
            6.Conventions

Everyday Mathematics

• The Grosse Pointe School System just adopted this math program which was developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project.  It will follow your children through their elementary school career.  (See additional handouts for more info.)

Social Studies

• Grosse Pointe just approved this new curriculum this past spring developed by Scott Foresman.  There are 6 units of study that will be taught throughout the year.  The units may be taught out of this specific order so that they can be taught within other classroom themes or timing of holidays etc. throughout the calendar year.
