Welcome to the Ferry Webpage.
Dexter M. Ferry Elementary is located in Grosse Pointe Woods, a suburb of
Detroit. There are approximately 430 students at Ferry in grades K-5.
Special programs include two gifted/talented magnet classrooms and a program
for autistic students. We also provide the full range of special subject
area teachers and support services for students. Kids’ Club offers before
and after school child care program.
A Computer Laboratory and multiple
computers in each classroom are integral parts of our instructional program.
All the computers are networked. A beautiful Nature Center fills our
courtyard area in the center of our school.
Our parents are very active and
provide much support and volunteer time for students and staff. Our very
active PTO supports the school through fundraising, volunteer work, and
special events. Some of our annual special events include a Fall Festival,
Breakfast with Santa, a book fair, and an Ice Cream Social. Financial
support has provided such equipment as a playscape for our playground,
lockers, library books and a variety of classroom materials.
The student is the focus of our
learning community. The Grosse Pointe Public School System and Ferry take
great pride in our academic excellence. Differentiated instruction is a
major focus of our instructional practices. It involves "using a variety of
teaching materials, strategies and techniques based upon the learner’s
current instructional level, interests, aptitudes and abilities in order to
bring about desired expectations and preferred learning results." District
committees composed of teachers, parents, and administrators regularly
review our curriculum and revise it based on the Michigan curriculum
standards. Our MEAP and standardized test scores are well above the national
and state averages. We are accredited through the North Central Association.
Ninety percent of our students go on to higher education throughout the
United States.
