The Michigan Department of Education requires that all new teachers must complete 90 in-service classroom hours within the first three years of teaching. Grosse Pointe’s first-year requirement is 45 in-service classroom hours.

For teachers who were granted tenure in another district but who are new to Grosse Pointe, the first year requirement is 23 in-service classroom hours.

The total hours required of a previously tenured teacher is 45 hours total.

2. What qualifies for receiving credit towards the 90 hours?

Approved Out-Of-District Workshops
Conferences/Workshops Attended During The Scheduled Work Day

3. What parts of my graduate courses qualify for credit?
You are limited to 23 hours of NTC (new teacher credit) for the first year and 45 hours total for all three years. New teachers in the Grosse Pointe district who are already tenured Michigan teachers will receive 12 hours for the first year and not more than 22 hours total for all three years.


4. Can any of my New Teacher Credits also qualify for salary credit?
Yes, for any classes, workshops, committees or meetings that occur outside the normal school day and for which the district has not paid.

5. What does not qualify for NTC?
Staff Development half days
Multi Site Meetings
Staff Meetings

6. How will I know how many hours I have in NTC?
We recommend that you keep a personal folder with all the workshops, committees and meetings you attend throughout the school year. (See Keeping Records) You will receive an annual report in the spring.
