Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA)

In second and third grade the Developmental Reading Assessment (or DRA) is used to determine student reading level and development.  The assessment is given by the Reading Specialist to individual students. The stories in the DRA determine two major aspects of reading.  The first area is the accuracy of oral reading.  Oral reading errors are noted (mispronunciations, substitutions, omissions, repetitions, etc.).  The second area is student comprehension of the material read.  This is evaluated through student retelling. Both areas of reading are critical to the child’s independence as a reader.  A student may qualify for reading support based on one area or both areas.
