Try this site for some writing topics which includes photos for added inspiration.

This site has alternatives to the standard book report. Suggested activity: Chain Together a Book Report.

English Basics

Reading and writing resources from NCTE. This site gives wonderful suggestions for grammar practice

Everyday Spelling Writing Prompts

This site has writing prompts organized by grade level. It encourages students to use their spelling and proofreading skills.

Favorite Poem Project

This video site has ordinary people reading a poem and discussing that poem. This would fit well in 8th grade honors classes. It is necessary to review the videos carefully before using them. Some are not appropriate for middle school.

Interactive Grammar Quizzes

This is an interactive section of the Guide to Grammar and Writing site. It provides dozens of online interactive quizzes to check understanding of grammatical concepts. This site provides opportunities for differentiation by allowing students to select their own quizzes to work on grammatical concepts or the teacher could assign quizzes as needed.

Kristine George

This site contains a wealth of information on poetry. This site includes audio tapes of Kristine’s poems. Teachers share ideas to motivate poetry wring.

MI Climb

"Clarifying Language in Michigan Benchmarks" features
an explanation of each benchmark in plain language, an example of a teaching strategy, a classroom assessment strategy, and a selection of resources to support the benchmark.

Mythology

This site is wonderful for myth writing. There are sample myths. There are three levels for each myth: beginner, intermediate and advanced. It gives students a step-by-step process for writing their own myths.

Read, Write, Think

This site contains several lesson plans and ideas for literature and writing exercises. Interesting activities listed: Alliteration in Headline Poems and Avalanche, Aztek or Bravada ? This is a connotation mini lesson that takes 50 minutes and is perfect for 8th grade differentiation. It takes time to search the database, but it is well worth the effort.   

Rhyme Zone

This site has some interesting materials such as information on Shakespeare, quotations, quizzes and a reverse dictionary.

Scholastic

Go to the Lewis and Clark site. It is interactive in a number of ways. It includes text, maps, time-lines, and primary sources of explorers’ journals. It connects to literature unit of reading Streams to the River, River to the Sea, etc. It connects to the language arts curriculum of keeping journals.

Simile Safari

Perfect when reviewing similes in the 7th grade poetry unit. The following activity was suggested: Simile Safari. Create a PowerPoint presentation using similes in rhyming couplets to compare photos of people and animals

Spark Notes

A myriad of useful sites. This site has the Miriam Webster dictionary/thesaurus online. This site could save on future purchases of these materials.

Story Starters

Here are 50 ideas to get the creative juices flowing. Click on Writing Process at the bottom of the page for help with brainstorming, graphic organizers, the first draft, revising, editing and the final copy.

St. Martin's Press

This site is terrific for allowing students to work independently on interactive lessons. One suggested activity: The Elements of Poetry section which provides definitions, examples and exercises that address Standard I, Grade 7.

Ten Character Diary Entries

Responses while reading a novel. Each student chooses a character after reading part of a novel and then the student, thinking like the character, answer questions. Contains challenging materials for 6th through 10th graders. Interesting activities listed: Character Diary Entries and Ten Oscar Entries. This is a great site for writing prompts and activities for free writes.

Themes and Literature Circles

This web project will help make the connection between theory and practice by exploring some online resources related to literacy, themes, literature circles, technology and learning. This site is rich with activities and suggestions. Check out the web quests for middle school students. Titles, such as The Outsiders, Pigman, Roll of Thunder, Hear me Cry, Diary of Anne Frank and Charlotte Doyle are included.

This comprehensive site contains links to lesson plans and ideas for literature and writing exercises, drama, poetry, speech and many other language arts topics

Wired for Books

This site has a listening resource that will read aloud Dickens’ A Christmas Carol .This site is good for auditory learners. It contains many books on tape which can be played in the classroom, without any cost to us. this site also includes essay questions, study questions and quizzes.
