HANDWRITTEN
TYPED OR WORD PROCESSED
Paper size
  • Use 8" x 10.5" regular ruled red margin line and punched on left-hand side.
  • Use 8.5" x 11" standard typing paper.
Heading
In the upper right-hand corner list:
  • Student name (first & last)
  • Course, period of the day (English, 5th)
  • Teacher's name
  • Date
  • Mode (essay, poem, etc.)
  • Draft number (if applicable)
  • Use left align tab set at 4" and list as handwritten.
Title
  • Center on the first line of the first page.
  • Capitalize the first word and all important words in the title.
  • Leave a blank line between the title and body of the manuscript.
  • Triple space below heading.
  • Center on the next line of the first page.

Page Layout
  • Use only one side of each page.
  • Use black or blue ink on final drafts.
  • Write on every other line.
  • Leave two empty lines at the bottom of each handwritten page.
  • Number each page after page one in the upper right-hand corner.
  • Use only one side of paper.
  • All margins should be 1 ¼ inch (Microsoft default).
  • Double space.

Indentation
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph one inch from the left-hand (red line) margin.
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph one tab from the left-hand margin.
Neatness
  • Use clips or staples to fasten multiple sheets together; do not fold corners.
  • Submit final drafts without blots, excessive erasures, or crossed-out words.

PAPER WRITTEN IN CLASS (IMPROMPTU)

  • Neatly cross out or erase mistakes. Do not use white-out.
  • For evaluation purposes, papers written in class will be evaluated as first drafts written under the pressure of limited time.

PAPER WRITTEN AT HOME

  • Any erasures and crossing-out may lower your grade.
  • Most papers written at home are evaluated as finished and free of mechanical errors.
