Black History Month was first
observed in 1975 to coincide with our nation's bicentennial celebration.
An outgrowth of Negro History Week, founded in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson,
Black History Month celebrates our country's African-American
culture.
Born in 1875 to former slaves, Carter
Woodson attended Berea College in Kentucky and received a doctorate from
Harvard University in 1912. Dr. Woodson rose to positions of distinction in
education, as head of the graduate faculty and Dean of the School of Liberal
Arts at Howard University in Washington D.C.
Photos and more information about Dr.
Woodson are available at: Black
History Month Edges into the Mainstream.
