Elizabeth Chandler

In 1832, Laura Smith Haviland and Elizabeth Chandler founded the Logan Female Anti-Slavery Society in Lenawee County.  It was the first women's anti-slavery society in the Michigan territory, leading to one of the early Michigan stations of the Underground Railroad to Canada.

Sarah Emma Edmonds
1841-1898

Civil War "Spy"


 

Sarah Emma Edmonds of Flint, was the first Michigan woman to be a Civil War soldier. She served with the Second Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment and was known as "Pvt. Franklin Thompson".

Laura Smith Haviland

Laura Smith Haviland was a pioneer social activist who devoted her life to others. In 1837 she cofounded the Raisin Institute with her husband, Charles.  It was one of the first schools in the country to admit black students  She also organized one of the first stations on the underground railroad in Michigan.

Mayor of Detroit: 1890- 1897 and Governor of Michigan: January 1, 1897-1901, Hazen Pingree was born in Denmark, Maine, in 1840. He moved to Detroit where he became a successful shoe manufacturer.

Pingree held progressive political views and in 1890 he was the successful Republican Party candidate for mayor of Detroit.
In 1897 he was elected governor of Michigan. He died in 1901 while on safari with Theodore Roosevelt.

Sojourner Truth

Sojourner Truth was the name used by Isabella Baumfree, one of the best-known American abolitionists.
