Barnard Center is located on
the grounds of the Children’s Home of Detroit. It is a public school
operated by Grosse Pointe Public Schools for residents of the Children’s
Home.
There are three classrooms,
each staffed with a special education teacher and classroom assistant
trained to work with students who have special needs. The three
classrooms represent all levels of public education in the service that is
provided to children ranging from kindergarten through twelfth grade.
The program individualizes the Grosse Pointe
Curriculum for academic instruction with
a very strong emphasis on learning social skills, self-esteem, and behavioral
support.
In addition children have exposure to
technology, physical education, art, music and field trips in order to
provide them with a well-rounded school experience. A student’s
placement at Barnard Center is done on an individual basis, considering each
child’s individual educational and emotional needs.
